Do contractors charge sales tax in Oklahoma?

General information, not tax advice. Tax rules change and depend on the details of each job. Confirm how they apply to your business with your accountant or the state's revenue department before relying on them.

OK Oklahoma

Usually no tax on the invoice

Usually no. Oklahoma treats contractors as consumers who pay sales tax on materials used to improve real property.

Oklahoma's rules define contractors as consumers or users. They pay sales tax on the materials, supplies and equipment they buy to develop, repair, alter, remodel and improve real property.

So there is nothing to add to the customer's invoice for real property work. The rules give painting, road, grading and excavating, electrical and plumbing contractors as examples.

Items that do not become attached to real property are sales of tangible personal property. A septic tank sold without connecting it is one example in the rules.

Oklahoma generally does not tax repair labor. On a lump-sum repair, the repairer pays tax on the parts and charges none. Separately stated parts are taxable, and separately stated labor is not.

It turns on: whether the item is attached to real property; what trade the work is (alarm and security systems); on repairs, whether parts are stated separately.

Watch out for

  • Selling and installing burglar, security or fire alarm systems is a sale taxed on the total charge; separately stated installation is not taxed (OAC 710:65-19-4(c)).
  • From November 1, 2026, an emergency rule adds provisions for contractors working for exempt entities; they concern the contractor's own purchases (OAC 710:65 emergency rule, SB 44).
